What Size Rug Under a Dining Table?

A dining-table rug should extend about 60–75cm beyond every side of the table so chair legs remain on the rug when people sit down or stand up. Measure the table at its longest points, add clearance on all sides, then compare that footprint with the room.

Rug size for a 6-seat dining table

For many six-seat rectangular tables, a 200 x 290cm rug is the minimum practical starting point. A 240 x 330cm rug usually provides more comfortable chair clearance, especially when the end chairs are used regularly.

Rug size for an 8-seat dining table

An eight-seat table often needs 240 x 330cm, 280 x 380cm or larger. Measure the actual table and fully pulled-out chairs because table lengths and chair depths vary.

Round dining tables

A round rug can echo the table shape, but it still needs enough diameter for the chairs. Add approximately 60–75cm beyond the table edge all the way around. A large square rug can also work when it suits the room proportions.

Rectangular dining tables

Rectangular tables usually look most balanced on rectangular rugs. Centre the table on the rug and check that the rug does not interfere with walls, doors or nearby walkways.

Chair pull-out clearance

Test the layout with one chair pulled out to a comfortable sitting position. If the back legs catch the rug edge, choose the next size up. Low-to-medium pile is often easier around frequently moved dining chairs.
