How to Measure for a Rug
Measuring before you buy helps you choose a rug that relates properly to your furniture and leaves suitable walking space around the room.
Measure the furniture zone
For living rooms, measure the seating area. For dining rooms, measure the table plus the space needed when chairs are pulled out. For bedrooms, measure the bed and the coverage you want around it.
Mark the rug outline
Use removable tape or another safe method to mark the proposed rug dimensions on the floor. This makes it easier to visualise the finished scale.
Check doors and walkways
Make sure the proposed rug will not interfere with doors and does not create awkward narrow walking paths.
Then compare sizes in our Rug Size Guide Australia.
